Sandakan Central Market

The Sandakan Central Market is a key component of the Sandakan Harbour Square waterfront development and occupies a strategic positioning on the site that allows the efficient screening off and control of the servicing areas.

The central concept of the building design is the creation of a service corridor system that handles efficient waste/drainage disposal as well as goods delivery via a layout of wet corridors that links to the main service yard. Effectively, wet service circulation is kept separated from dry public circulation at all times, with the market stalls being the interface of the service and public areas.

A simple, functional Nautical theme is adopted for the architectural design, with a protruding Fish Jetty being emphasized to provide an immediately recognizable icon for Sandakan.

National Art Gallery

The National Art Gallery is envisaged as a sculptural and monumental landmark. The sculpted block hovering in the air and the sharp edges silhouetted against the sky will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on patrons of the gallery.

The basic building form is derived from the vernacular roof design to reflect the Malaysian national identity. It is further stylized into a truncated block which is stretched along Jalan Temerloh. An A-shaped roof straddles the block to break the monotony of a monolithic mass and introduces a light-filled atrium space internally.

Gallery spaces flanking the circular ramp serve as exhibition areas for more intimate and contemplative viewing. The rooms are partitioned to accommodate the diverse needs of the collection.

Kota-Darulnaim-Kelantan by Arkitek MAA

Kota Darulnaim

Being the seat award-winning of the Kelantan State Government and centre for all State ceremonies and functions, the design of this award-winning complex embodies distinct elements of Kelantanese architecture and its environment.

The building and roof forms are inspired by renowned local architectural forms of Masjid Kampung Laut for the State Assembly Building, Istana Sri Akar for the Banqueting Hall Building and Istana Balai Besar for the Office Buildings. Carved timber panelings are widely used for the interiors to reflect the local culture and practice.

The buildings and courtyards are connected by plazas and link ways, adapted from the traditional concepts of 'jemuran' and 'laluan' set among a landscape creating an overall village atmosphere.

Dayabumi General Post Office

The design rationale for the award-winning GPO and Postal Headquarters building was one of simplicity with the interplay of horizontal planes, solid, and voids. The basic external materials consist of glass mosaic tiles, with geometrical aluminium panels to blend with the modern Islamic architectural identity of the adjacent Dayabumi complex.

The building not only solves the technological and functional problems encountered in a Post-Office headquarters but also the design constraints placed on it by its location in the Dayabumi complex.
